trying to think of something nice/fun/inspirational to say/do/make/buy for my teammates tomorrow to make up for the fact i’ve made myself so physically ill over the thought of having to be in a room with them off-skates tonight that i’m just going to go straight home and go to sleep instead.
thoughts?
bonus points if it’s something that i can just leave in the locker room and never ever have to take any credit for.

skating in my first bout with the double crossers tomorrow. i’d like to say i’m excited, but i’m just full of all kinds of anxiety about our team dinner tonight—so much so that i probably won’t even go.
and then i’ll feel bad/weird/regretful about it.
so. that’s awesome.

bout week is bananas
if you asked me which was more unbearable: the seven-month recovery from my broken ankle or trying to choke down a banana every day during bout week, i think you’d be surprised by my answer.

i believe all visiting skaters means all visiting (league) skaters, but i’m sure they’d be happy to enlighten you of any reservations if you contact them at derbydiscount@windycityrollers.com. if you hear differently, let us know!

A lot of girls, maybe they drank or smoked, or they didn’t know what they wanted in their lives. There’s incentive here to kick bad habits, to get out of bad relationships. You find out what you can do physically, and it translates to other parts of your life. That’s why people keep playing for eight years and break bones and still want to go out there every night.

speed racer
spent some time working on my form with julia rosenwinkel this saturday. it’s kind of funny that it took two years for someone to help me figure out exactly how i was wasting all my energy, because, as strong as i am, i really should be a fast skater.
so, this month, i’ll be focusing on the left leg portion of the crossover motion. i’m sure there were other tips, but, for the most part, this involves really putting my weight over my left leg. (typically, this is the part of the motion where i lose my balance and the rest of my form contorts to recover.)
perhaps an even bigger help to my form was loosening my trucks. i can’t remember if i ever did this with my first pair of skates, but everything got clamped down after i came back from my broken leg.
i can’t even begin to tell you how big of a difference a half turn made in my crossover stride. i have always struggled with this and always figured i just had some weird inflexibility in my hip or leg, but the truck adjustment vastly improved the distance i was able to stride out with my left leg.
that said, loose trucks make the weakness in my left ankle markedly noticeable. i’ve got to get back in the habit of at-home PT.
i also need to get my lazy ass to some speed practices, but i’m so damned terrified of them. i should find a buddy…

I has teh derby sads.
Tell me what gets you through those sweltering summer insurances practices. Make me laugh about your derby funnies. Explain how your derby wife or some positively cheerleadery type brings you out of a funk when you’re determined to have a pity party.
Does this thing have an askhole? You should put all the things all up in that bitch.

possibly my first bout (with the double crossers). or not. who knows?
